ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಜಯಂತ್ ಕಾಯ್ಕಿಣಿಯವರನ್ನು ನನ್ನ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಗೀತರಚನೆಯ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದೆ. ಮುಂಗಾರು ಮಳೆಯ ಯಶಸ್ಸಿನ ನಂತರ ಜಯಂತ್ ಕಾಯ್ಕಿಣಿ ಬರೆದರೆ ಆ ಚಿತ್ರ ಶತದಿನ ಆಚರಿಸಬಹುದೆಂದು ನಂಬಿದವರು ಅನೇಕ. ಇದರ ಅರಿವಿದ್ದ ನನಗೆ ಜಯಂತರು ನಾನು ಅವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಮಾಡುವುದೂ ಅದೇ ಯೋಚನೆಯಿಂದ ಎಂದು ಎಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಾರೋ ಎಂಬ ಭಯದಿಂದಲೇ ಹೋದೆ. ಅದು ನನ್ನ ಮೊದಲ ಭೇಟಿಯೂ ಆಗಿತ್ತು.
ಆದರೆ ಮುಂದಿನ ಅರ್ಧ ಗಂಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ನನ್ನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಭಯವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಿದ್ದಲ್ಲದೆ, ಸಿನೆಮಾದ ಅವರ ಅರಿವು, ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಒಲವುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು. ಕಳೆದ ಆರು ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎಪ್ಪತ್ತು ಪದ್ಯ ಬರೆದೆ ಮಾರಾಯ. ಪದ್ಯ ಬರೆಯಲೆಂದೇ ಕುಳಿತರೆ ಪದ್ಯವೇ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಿನೆಮಾ ಪದ್ಯಗಳು ಭಾವಗೀತೆಯಂತೆ ಇರಬಾರದು ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಅರಿತೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಪುಂಖಾನು ಪುಂಖವಾಗಿ ಸಾಗಿತ್ತು ಅವರ ಅನುಭವ. ಅರಿವಿನ ಆ ಹಿರಿಯರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕಳೆದ ಅಷ್ಟೂ ಸಮಯವೂ ತುಂಬಾ ಮುದ ನೀಡಿತು. ಆದರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಹೊರಗೆ ಬರಬೇಕಾದರೆ ನನ್ನ ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದ್ದು ಈ ಚಿತ್ರಗೀತೆ ಎಂಬ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು musicals ಅಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ತುಂಬಾ music ಇದೆ.
ಭಾರತೀಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಿಗೇ ಈ ಗೀತೆಗಳು ಎಂಬವು ತೀರಾ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಭಾಗ. ಕಥೆಯೊಂದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವಾಗ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪದ್ಯಗಳು ಒಂದು ಅಡಚಣೆ ಅಲ್ಲವೇ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಇನ್ಸ್ಟಿಟ್ಯೂಟಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಭಾರೀ ವಾದ ನಡೆಯಿತು. ಆಗ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಇದ್ದ ಗುರುಗಳು, ಮಣಿ ಕೌಲ್‍ರವರು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರವಾದ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿನೆಮಾ ನೋಡುವ ಜನ ರಾಮಾಯಣವನ್ನೂ ಮಹಾಭಾರತವನ್ನೂ ತಿಳಿದವರಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ (ಪ್ರತಿ ವಿವರವೂ ಗೊತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವೂ ಅಲ್ಲ…) ಅವರಿಗೆ digression ತಮ್ಮ ಕಥಾನಕದ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗವೇ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಎರಡೂ ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಉಪಕಥೆಗಳಿದ್ದು ಅವು ಆ ಉಪ ಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವಾದರೂ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಪೂರ್ಣವೇ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಸಿನೆಮಾವೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಡು ಬಂದರೆ ಅದು ಉಪಕಥೆಯಂತೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಅವಧಾನದಿಂದ ಕೇಳಿ, ನೋಡಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಕಥೆಗೆ ಬರುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ನಮ್ಮ ವೀಕ್ಷಕರಿಗೆ ಇದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮ ವೀಕ್ಷಕರೆಷ್ಟು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟರೋ, ಅಷ್ಟೇ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ನಮ್ಮ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು.
ಹಾಗಾಗಿ Indian films are all about song and dance ಎಂದು ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಹಗುರ ಮಾಡಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದಾಗಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ನನಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಈ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯೇ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಜಯಂತರಂತ ಎಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾನ್ವಿತ ಚಿತ್ರ-ಕವಿಗಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ (ಹೌದು ಜಯಂತರು ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೀಮಿತವಾದ ಕವಿಯಲ್ಲ ಅಥವಾ ಸಾಹಿತಿಯಲ್ಲ. ಅವರ ವಿಸ್ತಾರ ಬಹಳವಿದೆ ಆದರೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಅದು ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವಲ್ಲ) ಎಂದು ನೆನಪಾಗಿ ಸಂತಸವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಂಗೀತ ಭಾರತಿಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಒಂದು ಅವಿಭಾಜ್ಯ ಅಂಗ. ಬೇರೆ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದ ಮಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ನಾವು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನ ಕಿತ್ತಿಹಾಕಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ ತಪ್ಪು. ಅದರ ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಅದನ್ನ ಹೇಗೆ ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಗೂ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಚಿತ್ರಿವುಸುವುದರ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಯೋಚನೆ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು.

y kannada industry people always looks towards hindi singers. i think we really learn from malyali singers. becuse the indian films are nothing but dance and songs. if i am wrong i am sorry abhayji….. i heard a lot about you… and i am also a customer of athri…..

ANS: Yes there are a plenty of new people who would like to write. But the problems are, Many of them are good pets but it is not the same to write a poem and to write for screen. You need different skills when you write for screen. Okay… even if someone has that knack of writing for screen, then it is not so often you meet one of them. When I my self am a first timer, it is always beneficiary to go with an experienced team. At least you can trust them to deliver exactly what you want them to.
Keeping all these in mind, I went to Kaikini sir. Not that I don’t respect any other lyricist, but I thought Kaikini was apt for what I was looking for.
Why kannada industry people always looks towards hindi singers.
ANS: this problem even music directors in Kannada Industry face. But the fact is, there are lot of female singers who come to play back singing. But there is a major dearth of male singers coming forward to sing for play back singings. There are few like Rajesh who do sing in Kannada. But you cant have them sing all the songs in every film as the requirement of voice keeps changing. This fact is supported by many music directors in Kannada. There was a small protest or something recently about the same issue and this was the fact which came up at that time.
Ii think we really learn from Malyali singers.
ANS: No single industry is similar to other in India. So why say that we need to learn from Malayali’s? they are good. But we are good in our own ways. The problems faced by two industries are very different. So there is no point making comparisons. Right?
